The Self-Employed Program is aimed at foreign nationals who:

  1. Have relevant professional experience in cultural activities or athletics

At a minimum, candidates must have been self-employed and/or have participated at a world class level for at least 2 years during the 5 years before application. The program has its own points system through which applicants are assessed based on their education, experience, age, language skills, and adaptability.

Qualifying occupations include:

  • Athletes
  • Coaches
  • Referees
  • Actors
  • Musicians
  • Artisans
  • Authors
  • Journalists
  • Librarians

The province of Quebec manages its own program for Self-Employed Workers, focused on people with at least 2 years of experience in a regulated trade or profession who are able to create their own job in the province.

Note: The Federal Self-Employment Program stream for applicants with farm management experience has been closed for new applications since early 2018. However, several Provinces have similar farm investment-focused immigration programs under the Provincial Nominee Program.
